Gregory Creekmore, Jr., 87, our hero fought his last fight, Sunday, July 31, 2016.
A longtime resident of Hampton, Gregory spent his childhood in Portsmouth. He was a trumpet player, an active member of the Boy Scouts of America Sea Scouts, and an amateur boxer in Norfolk. He began his career in 1946 with the United States Marine Corps serving in Japan immediately following WWII, during the Korean War, and serving in the Vietnam War. He was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School Class of 1945 and a half. Retired as a Marine Major after 22 years of service and later retired with the U.S. Postal Service after 20 years. He was a long time member of First United Methodist Church Fox Hill in Hampton.
Mr. Creekmore was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 57 years, Elizabeth "Beans" Pickin Creekmore and survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Harold "Blue" Bradley, Wanda and Michael Kinzie, Vickie and Chris Prince, Sheila and Joe Faith, Becky and Jerry Gentry; ten grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren with another arriving this winter. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Gregory and Bernice Creekmore and brother, George Creekmore.
The family would like to express a thank you to Morningside Assisted Living Newport News and Caregiver In-Home Care LLC for their loving care and support.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 am, Wednesday, August 3, 2016 at First United Methodist Church Fox Hill, Hampton followed by interment in Oakland Cemetery with full military honors. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6-7 pm at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Relay For Life or the Alzheimer's Association in memory of Gregory.
