Obituary

Goldie Marie Day Roberts, 94, died Friday, June 10, 2016. Born Goldie Marie Day in the small town of Artemas PA in 1922, she was the 8th of nine children and grew up on a rural farm. Goldie went to school in a one room school house until she moved to Cumberland Maryland where she graduated from high school.

She later met her first husband, Charles Swithers; they had a daughter, Pat.  He was a music instructor and together they traveled throughout the mid west opening music stores. They moved to Hampton in 1953 and managed a local music store for several years where she also taught music.  She always had a great love of music and played several instruments including the piano and her favorite the Hawaiian guitar. After Charles succumbed to cancer she worked as an assistant and office manager for a local dentist. Goldie met her second husband, Allan Roberts at Aldersgate Methodist church where they were married in 1959.  Allan worked at Newport News Shipbuilding and NASA until heart disease claimed his life. Goldie enjoyed being a homemaker, wife and mother; they had one son, Bruce. She always had a strong faith and frequently worked in the church office helping the minister and enjoyed teaching Sunday school for many years.

She had a love of landscaping and continued gardening into her 90's. She was known for her beautiful yard and people driving by would often stop by to admire it. Goldie met her third husband retired Col John Roberts, at age 60; they were married for 30 years. They enjoyed looking after the grandchildren and gardening. They were both active in their church and helped with fund raising.  They kept in shape by joining a local walking group and continued daily walks into their late 80's.

Goldie was preceded in death by husbands Charles Swithers, Allan Roberts and Col John Roberts.  She is survived by daughter Pat Millington and her husband Brian; and son Bruce Roberts, his wife Amy and two grandchildren Zachary and Sasha. She is also survived by her step daughter Cheryl Hooks, her husband Tom and grandchildren Melissa and Tom and step son Richard Roberts and his daughter Rochelle.

Special thanks to Interim Hospice and Commonwealth Assisted Living for the special care they provided during her battle with dementia.
