Obituary

Gladys Adeline Lewis, 92, of Hampton, Virginia lost her battle with cancer on July 21, 2019 and went to be with her husband in Heaven. She was the widow of Beverley West Lewis, and mother to Sally A. Lewis of Hampton and Ellen L. McGimsey (Richard) of Roanoke.

Gladys was a native of Norfolk, Virginia and was the adopted daughter of Earl W. and Lucille S. Toxey. She graduated from Maury High School and the Norfolk Division of William and Mary where she was the top Sociology graduate. She was married to Bev for 60 years.   She worked her way through college as a switchboard operator and postal clerk and later worked in Washington D.C. as a bookkeeper for Suburban Trust Bank and as the record department manager for Woodward & Lothrop. She had a lifelong passion for learning; in her 60's she went back to school to learn accounting and computer programming.

She enjoyed watching sports and attending William and Mary football games and seeing a few of her granddaughters' games. Her happiest times were being a mother and providing a variety of experiences to her daughters through her roles as room mother, Brownie and Junior Girl Scout leader, and church volunteer. Throughout her life she was a voracious reader, avid knitter and crocheter, crafter, beach walker, traveler, camper, and Master Gardener. She loved being out in nature and working in her garden. Gladys enjoyed making and sending Christmas ornaments and gifts to many nieces, nephews, cousins, and special friends. She is remembered for her volunteerism and her generosity to those in need.

Gladys had a natural curiosity about the world that fueled many of the family's trips. She was especially fond of New Orleans, where she had close friends from childhood.

Additional survivors include granddaughters Caroline and Meredith McGimsey, as well as a sister-in-law, nieces, nephews, and cousins, and her beloved dogs.
