Elizabeth Conkling passed away, Monday, August 26, 2013. She was born on August 27, 1919 in Richmond, Va., the daughter of William Thomas and Gladys Davis Price. Known as "Bootsie", she graduated from John Marshall High School and the Comptometer School. After 23 years of service, she retired from Basic Construction. Her time was then focused on volunteering at Sentara Hospital (the old Hampton General). She accrued 11,000 hours of dedicated work. Devoted to family, church and community service, she was committed to Eastern Star and the Robert Raikes Sunday School class at Central United Methodist Church, where she was a member for more than fifty years. Her skills and talents brought recognition as Past Worthy Grand Matron of the Betsy Ross Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star in Richmond. Later, she was a member of the Colonial Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, in Hampton. After moving to Hampton, she was elected President of the Hampton Exchange Club, the first all woman club in the area. During those years she also was an Exchangette. An excellent cook, her recipes were memorized and famous. She loved family gatherings, and took great pride in watching the younger members of the family grow and mature.
She was preceded in death by three sisters:Margaret P. Snavely, Emily P. Price, and Alice P. Miles, as well as her beloved husband of 48 years, Clarence E. Conkling.
She is survived by two sisters: Mary Frances P.Brittle and Alva P. Haley, both of Richmond; her sons and their wives:William (Anne) of Williamsburg, and Craig (Gale), of Hampton, three Grandchildren: Christopher, of Hampton; Sean, of Chandler, AZ and Sarah, of Ithaca, NY. 5 nephews, 6 nieces, and many great- nephews and great-nieces.
In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Central United Methodist Church, 225 Chapel St., Hampton, Va.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday Sept. 4, 2013 at 1 pm at Berceuse Funeral Home, 2609 Cunningham Drive, Hampton. Interment will be private at a later date.
