Gerald O. Rummel, 86, died Thursday, December 1, 2016. Born in Frankenmuth, MI, Gerald served 22 years in the USAF before retiring at LAFB. While stationed in England, he met and married his wife Janet in 1958. He then worked in civil service as a computer programmer at LAFB until retiring a second time and joining Zeltech.

A member of Wallace Memorial United Methodist Church, he served as a lay leader there. Gerald was a great fan of sports having played and coached many and was well known as a soccer coach in the Phillips Athletic Association.

Gerald is survived by his wife, Janet Margaret Rummel; daughter, Vicky Tolson and husband Edward; son, Wayne Rummel and wife Gloria; sisters, Phylis McDonald and Ellen Duff and Jane Kaes; brother Eugene Rummel; grandchildren, Jenny Rummel, Christopher Campbell, Ryan Campbell and wife Heather, Jason Tolson and wife Jessica and Louise Rummel; ten great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Monday from 5-7 pm at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home. A funeral service will be conducted at 9:30 AM, Tuesday, December 6, 2016 at Wallace Memorial United Methodist Church by Rev. Herbert Brynildsen Jr. and Pastor Thom Schutt. The interment will be held at 11:30 AM Tuesday in the Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial State Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk.

The family requests that memorials take the form of contributions to Wallace Memorial United Methodist Church or the Hampton VA Medical Center Palliative Care Unit.
