Obituary

George F. West, Sr., 81, of Hampton, passed away on November 6, 2014, from complications related to Parkinson's and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary diseases. George was born in Salem, Ohio, to the late Hansine and Frank West. After his high school graduation, George served four years in the United States Air Force, including a tour of duty in Korea and his final tour at the Langley Air Force Base in Hampton, Virginia. George loved growing up in Ohio and often reflected on gatherings at the family farmhouse and the creek. He also loved sports, and was proud to have played on his high school's varsity basketball team. As an avid Ohio State University fan, he enjoyed watching the Buckeyes play football and basketball on television. After retiring from chemical company BASF, George started a successful home improvement business where he delivered quality workmanship, professionalism, and a smile to his customers. He was a dedicated father, grandfather, and husband, and he cherished every moment he shared with his four dogs, Chi-Chi, Missy, Bitsy, and especially Ginger. His dogs brought George great comfort during the final months of his life by rarely leaving his side. Those close to him will forever miss George's gentle spirit and love of laughter. His wife of 56 years, Norma, parents, Hansine and Frank, and his sister Imogene preceded George in death. He is survived by three children, George F. West, Jr., and partner Pamela Withrow of Hampton, Cliff West of Hampton; Debbie Lucas and husband John of Gloucester; five grandchildren, Ryan, Nina and husband Brandon, Blake, Seth, and Haley; and two great grandchildren, Shalan and Madilin. The family expresses gratitude to Dr. Teresa McConaughy and Riverside Hospice for the compassionate patient care that was provided during George's final months of life; Dr. Blair Marsteller for providing years of compassionate care and encouragement during George's struggle with Parkinson's disease; hospice nurse Leslie for her professionalism and attentiveness after his recent fall; and his primary hospice nurse Kasey for her patience, professionalism, kindness, sense of humor, and understanding of his protective dogs. George repeatedly remarked how much he "liked Dr. Mac and Kasey." George was thankful to George, Jr., and Debbie for the around-the-clock care they provided, allowing him to pass away at home with his dogs at his side. He recently professed his belief in God and was at peace knowing he would reunite with family members in Heaven. In respecting George's wishes, there will be no visitation or formal funeral. Internment will take place at the Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery. R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home in Hampton, Virginia, is handling arrangements. Expressions of sympathy can be made to the Animal Aid Society in Hampton, Virginia, in memory of George and his former Animal Aid Society rescue dog, Tabby.
