George H. Honaker, 78, died November 16, 2016. A native of West Virginia, George had been a resident of the Peninsula since retiring from the Army.

During his time in the Army, he served two tours in Vietnam and received numerous awards and decorations including; Bronze Star with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Purple Heart, two Good Conduct Medals, the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Commendation Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Armed Forces Honor Medal second class, Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm, and Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation.

Following his retirement from the Army, George continued to work as an automotive technician and further pursued his love of cars by racing at Langley Speedway and serving as a crew chief. He was a talented woodworker, and more than anything he was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.

George was preceded in death by his son, Charles Honaker, daughter, Virginia Cooper, and grandson SPC Christopher Honaker.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Alice Honaker; children, George and Eva Honaker, Slemp and Loraine Honaker, Chandra Berry, Lynn and Jeff Pace, five grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home on Tuesday, November 22, 2016 from 6-8PM. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, November 23, 2016 at 2:30PM. Interment with full military honors will follow at Hampton Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donation be made to the American Kidney Foundation or the Fisher House Foundation.
