George Harrison Chappell, Jr., 66, died Tuesday, January 5, 2016. Born in London, England, he had lived in Hampton most of his life where he graduated from Kecoughtan High School in 1967. He attended ODU for a short time and then graduated from the Newport News Shipbuilding Apprentice School. He worked as a designer at the Newport News Shipyard, then went to work for Forrest Coile and Associates, and was currently a partner at MJT Consulting Engineers. George had been very involved in youth sports, both coaching and officiating for the Phillips Athletic Association, enjoyed watching college sports, especially basketball, and was an avid reader.
Survivors include his wife, Naomi Chappell; his daughter, Meredith Chappell of North Carolina; two grandsons, Jacob and Caleb Guffey; his mother, Lucille Chappell of Hampton; his sister, Linda Hancock of Hampton; a brother, Robert Chappell and his wife, Margo of Smithfield; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 PM, Friday, January 8, 2016 in the R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home chapel by Dr. Allen B. Hopkins. Interment will follow in St. Luke's Cemetery in Smithfield. The family will receive friends from 6-8PM Thursday at the funeral home.
