IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Gail Barbara
Rehmert
October 22, 1938 – February 17, 2026
Gail Barbara Rehmert, lovingly known as "Bunny," passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 17th. Born in 1938, just after the Great Depression, Bunny entered the world on Staten Island, New York, to her proud Norwegian parents, Chris and Vera, who had immigrated to the United States from Norway in pursuit of a better life.
Bunny carried her Norwegian heritage with deep pride throughout her life. She adored her parents and held a special bond with her beloved older sister, Karen. Though born in New York, Bunny grew up in Hampton and remained a lifelong resident of the community she loved.
She married young and became the devoted mother of four boys—George, Mike, Dave, and Steve—who were the pride and joy of her life. Of all her accomplishments, nothing brought her greater fulfillment than being their mother.
Bunny began her professional life as a legal secretary, but her determination and love of learning led her back to school. Through perseverance and hard work, she earned her Master's Degree from the College of William & Mary. She went on to serve as a teacher, guidance counselor, and college English professor, touching countless lives with her wisdom, compassion, and encouragement.
A woman of remarkable spirit and wide-ranging interests, Bunny enjoyed playing bridge, painting, and playing the piano. She even solo flew an airplane once—an achievement that reflected her courage and adventurous heart. Yet despite her many talents and passions, what she enjoyed most was being around her family, to include her many Dreybus grandchildren, to include Sean, Paul, Christopher, Zachary, Nicholas, Sabrina, Lexi, Erica, and Carter (Wooten) along with the great grandchildren.
Bunny was filled with laughter, warmth, and a deep care for others. Her faith was central to her life. She attended St Joseph's church each Sunday—often quietly and without fanfare.
Later in life, Bunny found great joy and comfort with Colby Rehmert, her best friend and husband. They shared many happy years together until his passing in 2017. In her final years, Bunny faced the challenges of dementia with quiet strength.
Her children, extended family, and all who knew her were deeply blessed by her beautiful, strong, caring, and loving soul. For five years, she was well taken care of by the wonderful people at the Spring Arbour Cottage and her family so appreciates them.
While we grieve her loss, we take comfort in the assurance that Bunny is now with God.
She will be profoundly loved, deeply missed, and forever cherished.
