Frederick Ray Wingate, Jr., 68, passed away Wednesday, April 3, 2014 after a six month battle with cancer. He was born in Greenville, NC and moved to the Peninsula when he was 8. Freddie graduated from Hampton High School in 1966 and was employed by Newport News Shipyard when he retired after 41 years of service.

Freddie was a member of Monitor Masonic Lodge #197 in Phoebus and the Hampton Elks Lodge #366 where he had numerous friends.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Candace Conner Wingate; two sons, Frederick R. Wingate III and Rush Conner Wingate and his wife Michele; and his four wonderful grandchildren, Shelby Wingate, Sydney Wingate, Katlynn Steighner and Zachary Wingate; his sister Belinda Saunders; and brother Alton Bruce Wingate; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 AM, Friday, April 11, 2014 at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home 245 S. Armistead Ave. The family will receive friends from 6-7:30 PM, Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home.
