IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Frederick A.
Shannon, Jr.
September 28, 1937 – February 4, 2025
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Frederick Ambrose Shannon, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, firefighter, veteran, and advocate, who left us on February 4, 2025, at the age of 87.
Fred dedicated his life to service—first to his country as a proud member of the U.S. Air Force, serving in Korea, and later to his community as a firefighter. He served the Hampton Fire Department for many years, retiring as an acting battalion chief. Fred also coordinated the EMS system for the entire city, helping ensure the safety and well-being of his fellow citizens. His bravery, dedication, and selflessness left a lasting impact on those he served alongside and those he helped throughout his career. He was also a driving force in passing legislation in Virginia to improve the safety equipment used by firefighters, ensuring future generations would be better protected.
Beyond his service, Fred was a man of deep intelligence and incredible skill. He had a sharp mind and a talent for fixing and building things, whether it was repairing old clocks or converting a bread truck into a camper. He loved the outdoors, spending his time gardening, camping, and in his younger years, riding his motorcycle around the country in search of adventure. He had an eye for details and a knack for making things work, always ready with a creative solution to any challenge. He was also known in the fire department as a great cook, delighting his fellow firefighters with his culinary skills and always willing to share a meal with those he worked alongside.
Above all, Fred always put his family first. He cared deeply for them, not just in life but even in planning for their well-being after he was gone. He is survived by his daughters, Linda and Terrie, his beloved grandchildren, his devoted sister, Margaret, and his brother-in-law, Ray. He was also a cherished friend to many, including his longtime neighbor and close friend, Keith, whom he cared for and stood by for decades. His kindness, generosity, and unwavering support will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A graveside service to honor Fred's life will be held at 3:00 PM on Monday, February 10, 2025 at Parklawn Memorial Park.
Rest easy, Dad. Your watch has ended, but your love and legacy will live on.
