Frederic Wood "Ted" Gray, 89, died Monday, May 11, 2015. Ted was born in Pekin, IL on August 20, 1925, to the late Charles W. Gray and the late Ella W. Gray. In 1941, he was awarded his Eagle Scout badge and later graduated from high school in Milton, MA. Ted served in the Navy during WWII and then attended Harvard and MIT. He graduated from Yale School of Medicine in 1949, and remained there for his surgical residency. On April 4, 1953, he married his love, Phyllis, and they recently enjoyed their 62nd anniversary. Serving as a surgeon with the Navy, then Marines, and finally the Air Force, he retired in 1967. He served as President of the Virginia Amateur Athletic Union (AAU), served on the Board of Directors for Dixie Hospital/Hampton General Hospital/Sentara Hampton, was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and was a Diplomat of the American Board of Surgery. Ted was a longtime member of St. John's Episcopal Church, where he served as a member of the vestry. He also served as Senior Warden and as a Trustee. Ted was also a member of the Hampton Medical Society and the Merrimac Investment Club. Ted is survived by his wife, Phyllis Haddock Gray; daughter, Darcey G. Bird (James L. Bird) of Poquoson; sons, Gary W. Gray of Hampton, and Charles C. Gray (Wendy M. Gray) of Williamsburg; grandchildren, Ella Elizabeth Gray, Megan Wardlaw Gray, Andrew Morgan Gray (Andrea Q. Gray), James Frederic Bird, Kimberly Haddock Gray, Connor Jayne Bird, Allison Lynn Gray, Emily Marie Gray and Josiah Allen Gray; and great grandchildren, Chloe, Angelina, and Scarlett Gray. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, May 19, 2015 at St. John's Episcopal Church by the Rev. Samantha Vincent-Alexander. A reception in the church parish house will follow. The family will receive friends Monday, May 18, 2015 from 5-7 PM at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, 245 S.
