Obituary

Colonel Francis Kenneth Gates, III, fondly known as Rusty, peacefully went home to be with our Lord Jesus Christ to join his father. He is survived by his devoted wife, Lisa; his loving mother, Margie; his sisters, Pam (Ed) and Jenni (Jerry); and younger brother, Geoff (Star); and many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.

A kind, thoughtful and gentle soul, Rusty's legacy of caring will live on for generations through all of those that he touched. If we are the sum of our life's experiences, then Rusty's life can best be characterized by love, patience, a sharp wit, and a well-developed sense of good humor. He joyfully dedicated four decades leading and serving American Soldiers and their families and it was his calling in life. Rusty was a devoted friend and a passionate William & Mary Football fan. He loved all things green and gold. He and his wife, mom and friends rarely missed a Tribe home football game, and they faithfully upheld the traditions of celebrating, win or lose. Rusty was a true Patriot and he loved America and the freedoms granted to us by our Constitution. Among those veterans in his circle of friends, Rusty was considered their hero for his resilient and courageous battle against cancer. Even on his worst day he was quick to ask others how they were doing and to make sure their needs were met. He never complained about his own condition but cheerfully squeezed every moment out of the present as if a big green and gold bow were wrapped around it. Life to Rusty was a gift and he shared that gift with everyone he met. He was a true gentleman in every sense of the word. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Go Tribe, Rusty! We love you and it's not goodbye, but until we meet again.
