IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Frances "Dickie"
Southall
January 14, 1922 – July 27, 2016
Frances (Dickie) Cathell Southall passed away on July 27, 2016. A life-long resident of Hampton, VA, she was born January 14, 1922 to Walter Edward and Blanche Benthall Cathell. She was educated in the Hampton school system, graduating from Hampton High School in 1939. She worked many years in the public at dress shops before having her own with her daughter and son-in-law. One of her nephews thought we should affectionately call it Dickie's Dress Shoppe…we were thrilled as it would have never happened without her!
She was a member of Memorial Baptist Church for 79 years, a member of the TJG Sunday School Class, the Colonial Place Woman's Club, the Hampton Arts Guild, the Exchange Club of Hampton, and at one time, she headed up the Wythe Recreational Association. She always enjoyed working with and giving young people a place to go..thus the Willis dances in the summer.
Left to cherish her memory is her loving family, who fondly called her "Mimi"; a daughter, Hope S. Speight and favorite son-in-law, B Wayne Speight; two grandsons, Chad and Bruce (Heidi); four great-grandchildren, Amelia, Kevin, Sylvan, and Wyatt; two sisters-in-law, Mattie Cathell and Norma Cathell; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, H. T. Southall, Sr.; her son, H. T. Southall, Jr.; three sisters, Olive Blanchard, Virginia Chappell, Mary Jane Bowman, and two brothers, Walter E. Cathell, Jr., and William T. Cathell.
Many thanks to Grace Hospice of Williamsburg. The family will receive friends and family at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home on Wednesday, August 3, 2016 from 5 – 7 PM.
