IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Evelyn Stone
Glass
December 12, 1931 – June 3, 2017
Evelyn Stone Glass. Born 12 December 1931 in Premier, West Virginia, the daughter of Robert Stone and Ella Hull Stone. Deceased 3 June 2017 in Hampton, Virginia, after a struggle with breast cancer of over two years. Evelyn died in her home surrounded by her children and very close friend. She was preceded in death by her husband Stony Johnston Glass. She is survived by her daughter Julie and son Eddie.
Evelyn graduated from Welch High School in 1947 and worked as a secretary in the Pocahontas Coal Company offices for four years. She graduated from the Lewis-Gale School of Nursing in Roanoke, Virginia in 1955.
After her marriage to Stony in 1958, she moved to Hampton, Virginia where she worked in several capacities. She worked as a Registered Nurse at Hampton General Hospital, The Baptist Home of Virginia, and later for the Peninsula Psychiatric Hospital, now Riverside Behavioral Health Center, until her retirement. True to her boundless work ethic, she did a large part of the hand drafting, bookkeeping, billing, and no small part of the field work for Stony's land surveying business.
Evelyn was a member of Emanuel Episcopal Church. She participated in the knitting circle at the Church where she created and donated many beautiful prayer shawls. The members of the knitting circle became Evelyn's close friends and a source of welcome support during her illness.
Evelyn abhorred cruelty and violence and very much embodied the philosophy of doing unto others as one would have done to themselves. She valued life in all its forms as evidenced by her love and care of many family pets through the years. As of Summer 2016, she was still taking solo rides on her own personal watercraft at her beloved home on the Chickahominy River, enjoying the wind in her hair.
