In the early morning of May 21, 2022, Evelyn Gentry Braxton answered the Master's call into eternal peace.  Evelyn was born on March 23, 1935, to the late Amel and Ruby Irene Gentry in Shady Valley, Johnson County, Tennessee.  Her early education was quite rewarding as she was an exceptional student, receiving many honors and accomplishments.  After graduation, the FBI recruited Evelyn to work.  On August 20, 1976, joined in Holy Matrimony, Evelyn married the love of her life, David Braxton.

Ms. Evelyn, as she was fondly called, was employed by Coats and Clark Company of Newport News as an accountant and bookkeeper; and was also the bookkeeper and tax consultant for E. D. Braxton Trucking Company.  She was a woman of many talents including excellent shorthand skills.  Ms. Evelyn furthered her education at the Mary Immaculate Hospital School of Nursing and trained as a LPN.

An avid gardener, Evelyn had an incredibly beautiful floral garden that she faithfully attended.   She also enjoyed working crossword puzzles.  Ms. Evelyn loved the Lord, attended Liberty Baptist Church whenever she could, and was devoted to reading her bible daily.  Kind and pleasant to all she met, Evelyn will be dearly missed by her family, friends, and neighbors.

Evelyn leaves to mourn and cherish her memory her beloved son John, whom she pampered and spoiled daily.

A funeral service will be conducted at 6 PM, Wednesday, May 25, 2022, at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, 245 S. Armistead Avenue, Hampton.  The family will receive friends from 5 – 6 PM prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be at 11 AM on Thursday, May 26 at Ayden Town Cemetery, Ayden, North Carolina.
