Esteva Newbill Sawyer, age 92, died peacefully on August 20, 2017, at Northampton Convalescent Center. Esteva was born in Newport News, VA on September 20, 1924. She was preceded in death by her parents, Stephen and Olympia Newbill and five sisters.

She is survived by her loving husband of 72 years, Thomas Paul "Buzz" Sawyer, three children and spouses, Tom and Linda Sawyer, Kathy and Richard Brandt, and Donald Sawyer; 5 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

After graduating from Newport News High School, she married her high school sweetheart, Thomas Paul Sawyer and enjoyed more than 70 years as a wife and mother. Esteva's love of family and friends was known to all as she sacrificed her time and energy as a caretaker, member of Wythe Women's Club, choir member, water aerobics and domino player. She touched the lives of many and will leave an indelible mark on those who were fortunate to be part of her life.

The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Marilyn Jones who was steadfast in providing love and comfort and to the staff at the Devonshire and Northampton Convalescent Center. Throughout her stay, staff members provided an uplifting smile and helping hand.

The family will receive friends from 10-11 AM, Thursday, August 24, 2017 at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 151 Wythe Parkway, Hampton with a funeral service immediately following at 11:00 AM. Interment will be at Peninsula Memorial Park.
