Erna Margarete Flade passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 20, 2018.  Erna was the youngest of five children born in Erlangen, Germany to Johann Matthaus Lochmueller and Margarete Lochmueller (nee Kolb) on October 20, 1926.

Growing up in Bavaria, Erna enjoyed going to her uncle's farm.  Erna took classes at University and later worked as a secretary.  She met her future husband, Harold K. Flade, in 1953 while he was stationed in Germany with the US Army.  Married in 1954, the couple moved to The Presidio of San Francisco, CA.   Other stations included Ft Benjamin Harrison, IN; Heidelberg, Germany; and Fort Monroe, VA.

Erna was involved in the US Army Community Service program where she volunteered for over 15 years.  She was also a volunteer nurse with the American Red Cross.

Erna was a devout Christian and an active member of several churches throughout her life.  At the Chapel of the Centurion on Fort Monroe, Erna was a member of the Choir, Protestant Woman of the Chapel, Bible Study, JoyGivers and the Altar Guild.

Although they had no children of their own, their home always rang with the sounds of neighborhood children.  Erna and Hack enjoyed many trips to visit family and friends in Germany.

Erna was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years Harold K. "Hack" Flade, her parents, her sister   Luise Wendler, brothers Fritz Lochmueller and Hans Kolb and one nephew also named Hans Kolb.

Erna is survived by one sister Johanna Rooijmans who is 101.  Left to cherish Erna's memory are many nieces and nephews:  Elke Krause, Gerhard Wendler, Michael Lochmueller, Stefan Lochmueller, Joerg Lochmueller, Inge Lochmueller-Seidel, Thomas Kolb, Doris Huber, Thomas Cohrs, Timothy Cohrs, Robert Flade and John Flade.

A memorial service is planned at the Chapel of the Centurion, Fort Monroe on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at 1:00 pm.  A reception will follow at the Chapel Center, 54 Bernard Road, Fort Monroe.

Erna will be interned with Hack at Arlington National Cemetery.
