Johnson
June 21, 1935 – January 6, 2024
Elsie S. Johnson, née Strickland, a resident of Yorktown, Virginia passed away peacefully on January 6, 2024. She was born on 21 June, 1935 in Darlington Township, South Carolina (SC), living in either Darlington County SC, Chesterfield County SC, or the Virginia Peninsula for the entirety of her life. She took great pride in her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. At one point both her son and daughter lived and worked overseas. She graduated from Saint John's High School in Darlington, and was a contestant in the 1953 Miss Southern 500 Beauty Pageant. She was proud of her Darlington heritage, especially the storied history of Darlington Raceway and its connection with NASCAR. After graduation, Elsie dedicated her life to being a devoted housewife and created a warm and loving home for her family. Her unwavering commitment and nurturing spirit will always be remembered.
Elsie leaves a legacy of love and cherished memories. She is survived by her son Charles Downing and his wife Shelly, her daughter DeNice Downing Abecassis and her husband Guy; four grandchildren, Erin Downing, Daniele Abecassis, Stephanie Abecassis, and Tamara Barker; and three great grandchildren, Leo Abecassis, Andrea Abecassis, and Mia Kearney.
