IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Elizabeth "Betty"
Louise (Yancey) Haywood
September 26, 1935 – June 24, 2019
Elizabeth "Betty" Louise (Yancey) Haywood of Hampton, Virginia passed away peacefully on Monday, June 24, 2019. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. In 1935, she was born in Houston, Texas, but spent most of her life in Hampton. As a child, Betty attended the Hockaday School in Dallas, Texas. In her teens, the family settled in Hampton, Virginia where she attended Hampton High School, graduating in three years instead of four with highest honors. Betty graduated from Mary Washington College with a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Home Economics and a minor in English. She taught Home Economics and English at Hampton High School for five years until the birth of her children. Betty was a member of the Mary Washington Alumni and active in the First United Methodist Church in Hampton. Years ago, as a volunteer she worked with children at Paul Burbank elementary school, teaching them to read. Betty spent countless hours helping at the family's former business, Sam's Seafood Restaurant located in Phoebus, Virginia. At the restaurant, she ran errands and picked up items, gave rides to employees without transportation; topped off the salad bar, and ensured several of the young men who worked at the restaurant had flowers to present to their prom dates. She had a generous heart, frequently going out of her way to get something for someone in need. Outside of her immediate family, she took care of many people. This includes grandchildren, Sam and Sarah, which she adored and lovingly helped raise while their parents worked. She loved to drive, visit historical places and eat at restaurants. Williamsburg, Yorktown, Smithfield, Surry, Gloucester, Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Gwynn's Island and White Stone in Lancaster County were some of her favorite places. On the road trips, Betty was often accompanied by her mother until her passing in 1990. She brought her children along too, instilling an appreciation of history and places in Virginia. She and her husband took several trips to Hawaii, one of their favorite places, with both having a personal connection to the islands even before they met. Betty was proceeded in death by her parents, Benjamin and Anna Yancey, and brothers William and John Yancey. She leaves behind a loving and devoted husband of 62 years, Ronald D. Haywood, and her children Anne Haywood Oliver (Michael), Nancy Holloway (Daniel) and Samuel Haywood (former wife Cindy) and wonderful friend Prinsez Teel, along with grandchildren Douglas, Andrew and Timothy Oliver; Hannah and Isabella Holloway, Samuel II and Sarah Haywood and her fiancé' Daniel Barnhill. She also leaves behind a sister-in-law, Joan Haywood, nieces, nephews and cousins. The family will receive visitors on Sunday, June 30, 2019 from 4 to 5 pm at the R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, Hampton. A graveside service will be held on Monday, July 1, 2019 at 10 am at the Parklawn Memorial Park in Hampton. After the service, family and friends will be received at 1 Henleys Way, Poquoson, Va. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to First United Methodist Church, 110 E.
