Obituary

Elaine F. Halabuk, 88, died June 18, 2015. She was born in St. Paul, MN, but at an early age, she and her family moved to Kansas City, MO. During her youth, she studied piano and was taught by her mother how to sew. She loved to ice skate with her sister and future sister-in-law. She enjoyed making her own clothes. While in high school, she won a perfect attendance award and a college scholarship. She married John Halabuk and together they raised 5 children during his 20 year Air Force career, settling in Hampton, VA in 1963. Elaine was devoted to her family, and was beloved by all who knew her. She was a very charitable, energetic, and fun loving person and enjoyed the lifelong friendships she made. She was a member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority. She was a volunteer for the Animal Aid Society and was a devout and long-time member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. She was an avid bowler. During her 20 year civil service career, she earned several monetary awards for her outstanding work in accounting. She was an accomplished seamstress and sewed and embroidered for all throughout her life but grew famous among her family and her circle of friends for her potato salad. Elaine was preceded in death by her parents; Henry F. Heenan and Yvonne Heenan, husband, John P. Halabuk, son, Philip F. Halabuk, and brother, Patrick J. Heenan. She is survived by her children; James P. Halabuk and wife Ellen, Teresa A. Roberts and husband Gary, Kathleen M. Halabuk Horkan and husband Michael, and Michael P. Halabuk; grandchildren, James P. Halabuk Jr. and wife Viki, Christine L. Howell and husband Rob, Kelly M. Hall and husband Jeff, Rebecca M. Walker and husband Chris, Sarah E. Minter, Phillip M. Halabuk and wife Bethany, and Rachel M. Lyman and husband Benjamin; seventeen great-grandchildren; sister, Yvonne Heenan; sister-in-law, Helen Heenan; and countless nieces, nephews, and cousins. The family will receive friends at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home Monday, June 22 2015 from 6-7:30PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, June 23 2015 at St. Joseph Catholic Church at 11AM. Interment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park.
