Elaine MacKenzie Garbe, widow of Burtrum Garbe, passed away after a short illness at her Sister's home in Hampton, VA. She was the daughter of Lyman C. MacKenzie and Viola S. Winters MacKenzie of Berkshires in Massachusetts. Elaine was employed by the telephone company starting as a telephone operator in Sheffield, Mass, and remained with the telephone company after graduating from Sheffield High School. She continued working at the company until her retirement from management, after many years of dedication. Elaine was an animal lover. Her love of cats and any other animals knew no bounds. She enjoyed gardening, raising flowers and feeding any animal or bird. She felt all birds should have a fresh clean bowl of water and a safe place to stay. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bertram J. Garbe, two brothers, Lyman MacKenzie and Colin C. MacKenzie, three sisters, Carolyn May, Lottie May, Virginia Viola and a nephew William Lyman Noyes and stepmother, Mable MacKenzie. Surviving are her two sisters, Hazel Mastin of Michigan and Shirley Esada of Hampton, VA. She is the aunt to numerous nieces and nephews spreading from New England to California and Alaska. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Elaine's Ashes will be inurned, with her husband, in Woodbury Ct. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions, in her memory, to any local organization that protects and cares for animals. The family would like to give a special thanks to Helen and Jessica at Intrepid Hospice and two very special nurses, Jamie and David, for their dedication to their chosen profession. Arrangements are by R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home in Hampton, 757-723-3191.
