IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Edward H.
Wright
October 14, 1928 – August 14, 2017
Edward Herbert Wright, son of the late Edward Spencer Wright and Anna McTeer Wright was born on October 14, 1928 in The Bronx, NY and died on August 14, 2017 in Hampton, VA. He attended the New York City Public Schools; notably graduating from The Bronx High School of Science. As a young teen, Eddie anticipated becoming a medical doctor until a Methodist pastor ministered to his family at the death of his father. It was then, inspired by the Rev. Wayne White, Eddie decided to be a minister. His teenage years were filled with good times at the Methodist church with guys and girl friends whose friendships lasted a life time.
After High School, Eddie entered Western Maryland College(now McDaniel) in Westminster, Maryland; a young man traveling on a train alone walking onto the campus with a cardboard suitcase. Studies at WMC were interspersed with diverse extracurricular activities and an active social life including a (later terminated) engagement. During his junior year, he met the love of his life "a silly freshman" named Elizabeth Anne Schubert, whom he married after her graduation in 1952. In the meantime Ed attended Westminster Theological Seminary, receiving his Divinity Degree after which he was ordained in the Methodist Church (now United Methodist Church). The young preacher and his wife lived in a variety of parishes-rural, suburban, downtown, college campuses while also parenting four lively children. The hallmark of Ed's ministry in addition to tending his flock was participation in social justice. During the 1960's he worked with Martin Luther King, Jesse Jackson and the Poor People's Campaign. Also indicative of his leadership was the encouragement of the laity as they sought to perform ministries in the church and community. After 25 years of marriage when his wife experienced a call to ministry, he supported her in her endeavors to enter a profession heretofore a man's domain. Following his retirement after 44 years in ministry, he became a much loved "minister's spouse" singing in the choir and teaching popular Bible classes. After his retirement he also initiated an English worship service at a Korean Church greeting parishoners with "An nyoung Ha Sae Yo!", Hello in Korean. In between times he enjoyed traveling with his family and spending time at the old family log cabin retreat Mutton Hollow in Greene County. Letters received through the years are testimony to his ministry of sharing God's love to everyone regardless of race or station in life.
In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his brother Clarence, sister Ruth, and infant grandson Spencer. He is survived by "Libby" his wife of 65 years; a brother Wally(Pauline) Wright; children, Shirley-Ruth Hulick and Violet(Toby)Breder, Fred(Sheila) Wright and Garry(Sally) Wright; grandchildren Betsy(Timothy) Pinder, Edward(Vicky) Hulick, Anna-Kate(Mark) Sedaca, Corey, Tommy, Angelyn Wright, Kelsea, Eliza, Preston and Madison Breder, Kati, Mandy and Matthew Wright; and great-grandchildren Regan, Quinn and Will Hulick, Heath and Kathleen Pinder, Jeremiah Sedaca; and a host of devoted nieces and nephews.
The viewing and visitation will be from 5:30 to 7:30 pm Friday, August 18thand Saturday, August 19th at 12 noon before the Celebration of Life which will be held at 1pm Saturday at Aldersgate UMC, 151 Wythe Parkway at Kecoughtan Road, Hampton.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Wesley Theological Seminary Washington, DC; The Agape' Children's Center, Horntown, VA; The United Methodist Federation Social Action, Virginia Chapter, 3031 Grayland Rd. , Richmond, VA 23221, of which he was a founding member.
