Edgar A.
Massenburg
August 15, 1925 – June 10, 2017
Edgar A. Massenburg died at home on Saturday, June 10, 2017. Born in Hampton to G. Alvin and Carrie Wood Massenburg, he was a 1942 graduate of Hampton High School. He entered VMI that same year and completed two years during which he played quarterback for the KEYDET Football team. Edgar joined the US Navy and graduated Midshipmans' school as an ensign at age 19 and was assigned to PC1218 escorting convoys between New York, Guantanamo and South America.
Following his discharge from the Navy, Edgar entered the UVA Law School, graduating in 1949. He practiced law in Hampton during which he was City Attorney and a substitute judge. He was appointed a full-time Traffic and Civil judge in 1959, and was elevated to the Circuit Court level in 1964. He retired from the Circuit bench in 1985.
Judge Massenburg was at one time a member of the Kiwanis Club, the German Club, the Hampton Roads Assembly, he served on the Board of Directors for Big Brothers, was a member of the BPOE 366, and the State Board for Branch Pilots.
Preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Carrie Stevenson, his brother, Alvin Massenburg, and a daughter, Gayle Pumphrey; survivors include his wife of 32 years, Patricia E. Massenburg; two daughters, Sheri Massenburg of Santa Ana, CA and Sally Hart of Newport News; four granddaughters, Holly Corrigan of New York City, Taylor Hart of Chesapeake, Jaime Frost of Yardley, PA, and Jacqueline Wallace of Raleigh; two great-grandchildren, William Frost, II and Abigail Frost.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 PM on Tuesday, June 13, 2017 at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home. A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church.
