Durward J.
Wilson, Sr.
June 25, 1943 – April 6, 2024
Durward J. Wilson, Sr. 80, died Saturday, April 6, 2024. Known affectionately as Big Derby, Dad, Pops, and G-Pops, he was born on June 25, 1943, in Poquoson/York County, Virginia to the late Arthur Glenn Wilson, and Lillie Powell Kissling. He is survived by his adoring wife and Sweetpea of 59 years, Sharron Diane Wilson and his children Durward J. Wilson, Jr. (Lisa Ann), and Valerie Wilson (Steve). He also was a cherished grandfather of Ryan Wilson (Holli), and two great-grandsons Hunter and Oliver. Durward was preceded in death by his brothers Arthur Glenn Wilson, Jr., Leamond "Noonie" Wilson, William Powell Wilson, and sister Brenda Gail Williams.
Durward retired in 1996 after 30 years of dedication and service, as a federal firefighter Captain at Naval Weapon Station, Yorktown Fire Station 13, and Cheatham Annex Fire Station 15.
Durward led his life with a passion for family, racing, and boating. For decades, Durward raced Inboard hydroplanes across the Eastern US before passing the propeller and becoming Crew Chief for his family with The Pink Panther I & II. He was an active member of The American Powerboat Association and once served as Race Director of The Hampton Cup Regatta. The family retired from boat racing in 2019.
When he wasn't racing, he and Diane could be found traveling in their RV across the US with their dear friends. He instilled a love for leisure boating in his family and they could often be found on the water together on beautiful summer weekends.
A man of many talents and passions, Durward found joy in various hobbies throughout his life, from drag racing his 1957 Chevrolet as a youngster to racing hydroplanes, and building boats and engines. He was truly a daredevil who loved the thrill of speed. He also enjoyed riding his motorcycle, fishing, kayaking, waterskiing, and snow-skiing. His skillful hands were always at work, showcasing his talent for fixing and building things.
Durward was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Poquoson, Virginia. He will be remembered for his adventurous spirit and unwavering love for his family.
Services for Durward Jerome Wilson, Sr. will be held on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, for family and friends from 4 PM to 6 PM and on Wednesday, April 17th, at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, located at 245 South Armistead Avenue, Hampton, Virginia 23669. The funeral service will begin at 2 PM, followed by a gravesite burial with honors at Parklawn Memorial Park in Hampton. A celebration of family and friends will follow the burial service at Angelos Steak House, 755 J. Clyde Morris Blvd, Newport News VA.
