IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Dorothy
Phillips
February 13, 1950 – May 25, 2022
Dorothy Ann Smith Phillips was called home to Jesus on May 25, 2022. She came into this world on a crisp day, February 13, 1950 in Staten Island, NY. A lover of life, Dorothy was nothing short of an adventure seeking young woman. Since her father, Harold C. Smith, who preceded her, was an avid outdoorsman, little Dorothy was taught to love nature and did so her entire life. Her mother, Antoinette R. Smith Jenkins who also preceded Dorothy, was a family woman, she loved her children fiercely, and was the influence to Dorothy's mothering side. Harold C. Smith Jr, the oldest of the three finally met his sister after 72 years, passing at only a few months old.
Dorothy's nature was that of caretaker. A graduate of Riverside School of Nursing in 1981, she worked years crafting her skills, eventually becoming the Head Nurse at Fort Monroe Health Clinic. There, she not only grew her abilities to run and manage a facility but met some of her dearest lifelong friends.
Nursing was just one part of her adventure. Dorothy was proud to say she hiked the Grand Canyon, white water rafted, flew an airplane, built a home, sailed boats, camped many times, traveled abroad, witnessed grandchildren being born, among many more things, all the while impacting people she would encounter and encouraging others to live their best life. She loved the ocean and beach, which led her to retire on Grandview Island, Hampton.
Dorothy belonged to different organizations over the years that touched her heart including, The Unity Sisterhood, GVI craft ladies, the prayer shawl group at St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Good Sams Club, and a book club with some of her best friends, to name a few. She cherished these people and held them close to her heart.
If you were ever fortunate to cross life's path with Dorothy you knew she had a fire lit inside her soul, something that could not be replicated by anyone else. She was fiercely strong and resilient. Her ability to see challenges in life and face them head-on with grace that can only come from God, is inspiring and life changing. When asked how she was doing many will remember her response, "All is well". This mantra would be the cornerstone of her life. Trusting that whatever she was facing God was in control and he had it all worked out, so all was truly well.
Left to carry on Dorothy's legacy is her loving husband, Stephen Phillips, her children Donovan Hindle, Jennifer Mimms, Jessica Allen, their spouses and children; brother Albert Smith, his four children, Debraann Smith, Anthony Smith, Albert Smith and Michael Smith, including their spouses and children; her aunt Claire Clark, and her four children, Daryl, Dwayne, Debbie and David; and uncle William (Bill) Yestueda, and his four children, Mary, Susan, Linda, and Bill.
Her impact on our lives will ripple from one generation to the next, carrying with it a joy and zest for God, life, and adventure.
The family will receive friends from 5:30-7PM Wednesday, June 1 at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home. A funeral will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church at 11:00 AM Thursday and interment will be at 12:30 PM Friday in Quantico National Cemetery.
