Obituary

HAMPTON -

Dorothy M Pawlewicz, age 88, left for the Father's banquet on Tuesday May 3, 2016.  Born on July 16, 1927 in Iron Mountain, Michigan, "Dort" was reared and schooled in Menominee, Michigan. Upon high school graduation, Dort left for Washington, DC where she worked for the Federal Internal Revenue Service while mastering skills at ball-room dancing on roller skates, bowling, and square dancing.  She square danced weekly on WTTV-DC, and, monthly in Constitutional Hall as well as at other public gatherings between 1947-49.  She also worked for an insurance company before retiring from the U.S. Veterans Administration in 1986.

Over 66 years of married life, Dort was consumed with life's opportunities.  She travelled throughout America's 50 States before her 35th birthday, growing her family in 8 states.  She was highly knowledgeable about birds, insects and flowers; gardening yearly, and augmenting her income from her folk-art/craft creations.  She co-led a social group, HAPPY WANDERERS, for 17 years; was active with the Coast Guard Auxiliary for 10 years; made, repaired and provided rosaries to overseas missions.  She volunteered regularly at her church, schools where her sons attended, and 2 hospitals; was an elected precinct officer; and was part of the first couple to serve as Eucharist Ministers at church services in Leavenworth, Ks.

Dort had a phenomenal memory; never forgot a relative's birthday or anniversary.  Her sense of humor was endless; her smile energized her companions.  She did meaningful things for the common good without embellishing herself.  She reflected spunk, smarts, energy and determination as she coped with her progressive loss of hearing.  She was unusually observant, a Christian example of wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.

DOROTHY is survived by her husband, DICK and two sons:  international banker, and pro-football player for the Philadelphia Eagles, and New York Jets, RICK (wife ANNA) of Minneapolis, Minn; and Sprint's IT Program manager, STEPHEN (wife PAULA) of Kansas City, Ks.  Dort has 6 grandchildren: KARL (and LINDSAY) PAWLEWICZ of NY City, HANNAH (and MIKE) VIERA of Los Angles, MICHAELA (and JAKE) McCANN of Washington, DC, SOPHIA PAWLEWICZ (Boston College), JOHN PAWLEWICZ (Univ of Kansas), MIRA PAWLEWICZ, and 2 great-grandchildren:  XAVIER and ABEL, plus one arriving in July.

A funeral mass will be celebrated 7:00 pm, Sunday May 15, 2016 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church (ICC), 2150 Cunningham Drive, Hampton, Va 23666 by Msgr. Robert Perkins.  Inurnment at ICC's columbarium will follow immediately after mass.  The family will greet all at its reception in ICC's Commons immediately following services.
