IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Doris Fryer
Spear
August 22, 1938 – December 25, 2022
Doris Fryer Craig Spear, 84, passed away on Sunday, December 25, 2022 following a lengthy illness.
Doris was born August 22, 1938 in Newport News to David and Annie Powell Fryer. Her father was born in Belfast, Ireland and came to this country in 1920 to work in the shipyard in Newport News. Her mother was a bookkeeper for P.K. Hunt and Son in Hampton until her retirement at age 78. Doris's parents met at a local Baptist church where her Dad directed the choir and her mother sang alto.
Her Dad was 59 years of age when Doris was born. He was so proud, he told his fellow workers at the shipyard that he had just come into a million dollars! Because her father directed various church choirs, Doris and her family attended several churches while she was growing up. She accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior just before her 8 th birthday at Wythe Parkway Baptist Church. Doris attended Hilton Elementary School and graduated from Warwick High School in 1956 as a proud Farmer!
Doris worked at NASA Langley in Hampton, and later retired from Newport News Redevelopment and Housing Authority as maintenance secretary where she was affectionately known as "Maintenance Mama."
Having been a widow for many years, Doris had no plans to marry again, however, God had already picked out a wonderful man for her, Charles "Charlie" F. Spear, who became the love of her life. They were married at Liberty Baptist Church on September 25, 2004. On September 25, 2011 Doris and Charlie joined Maranatha Baptist Church on their seventh wedding anniversary where they continued to fellowship.
Doris is survived by her loving husband, Charles F. Spear; sons, David Alan Breen and wife Deborah, Gary Kevin Breen and wife, Karen; grandchildren, Andrew and Elise Breen, and Danielle Breen Quinn; and sister-in-law, Sandy Vital.
A funeral service will be conducted at 10 am, Friday, December 30, 2022 at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, 245 S. Armistead Ave, Hampton by Rev. Dale Coffey and Rev. Bob Monteith with interment to follow in Parklawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Thursday from 5-6:30 pm at the funeral home.
The family would like to thank Heidi Strauss R.N. of Kindred Hospice for her exceptional care, love and support during Doris' illness. Doris will long be remembered for her beautiful smile, her many friends, and her love for her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
