Brown
May 6, 1929 – September 24, 2019
Doris Ruth Brown, 90, died September 24, 2019 after a long and steadfast battle with Alzheimer's disease. Born in Brooklyn, NY, she had been a resident of Newport News and the greater Hampton Roads area of Virginia since 1950.
Doris was a devoted wife and mother of five children. She worked diligently raising her family while also working outside the home, first as a phone operator at the Chamberlain Hotel and for a multi-business answering service. Doris went on to work and retire as a bookkeeper for York Oil Company in Hampton, continuing to work after retirement as bookkeeper for Hydracrete Pumping, and then as a volunteer in the gift shop at Riverside Rehab in Newport News. Doris was a faithful member of Grace Episcopal Church, where she sang in the choir and served as a member of the altar guild.
Preceded in death by her husband Bobby in 1992 after 43 years of marriage, Doris is survived by: two sons, Michael Brown (Anne-Marie), and Phillip Brown (Sarah); three daughters, Linda Edwards (Sam), Beverly Powell, and Kathy Marple (Ike); 11 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 23 at 1PM at Ivy Memorial Baptist / Freedom Life Church, 2200 Coliseum Drive, Hampton, VA 23666.
