Doris Holt Barnes, 97, met her Savior and family in heaven on October 1, 2017 at 12:48 a.m.. Affectionately known as Gram she was a beloved mother, grandmother, aunt and friend to all she met. Doris retired from F.W. Woolworth in the Wythe section of Hampton after receiving several awards for her outstanding service to her customers. She supported her children and grandchildren in Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. She especially loved sharing her talents and stories of her youth with the Girl Scouts of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. She loved her church family at East Hampton United Methodist Church and was a beloved supporter of their Spring and Fall yard sales for missions.
She joined her departed family including her loving husband Louis Clarke Barnes, son; David L. Barnes, daughter-in-law, Judy L. Barnes; son-in-law, James T. Zacharias; granddaughter, Tammy A. Smith; her parents, James A. Holt and Denna B. Holt, along with eleven brothers and sisters, Paris Holt, Frank Holt, Henry Holt, James Holt, Sadie Anderson, Fannie Callahan, Annie Forbes, Della McFalls, Susie Mitchell, Hilda Scott, and a baby sister.
She is survived by her daughter, Denna B. Zacharias; son, George Barnes; grandchildren, Heather and Billy Bluestein, Steve and Michelle Barnes, Paula and David Riley, Karin and Marty Mills, Kit Barnes, Kate Barnes, and Cindy Staton. She also has seven great grandchildren; Noah Zacharias, Connor Bluestein, Sarah Cook, Jennifer Hunt, Kayla Steelman, Breanna Riley, and Andrew Smith as well as seven great-great grandchildren, along with extended family members.
The family will receive friends at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home on Wednesday October 4, 2017 from 1-2PM, a memorial service will follow at the funeral home at 2PM.
The family requests that Gram be remembered by love for your family, Acts of kindness to one another, and when you see the flowers start to bloom, say a prayer of Thanksgiving in her memory.
