Obituary

On October 22, 2024, Donald B. Woolever, Sr., U.S. Army SGM (retired), a wonderful husband and devoted father and grandfather passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side. Born December 23, 1939, in Dolgeville, New York, Don graduated from St. Mary's Academy High School and earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Webster University.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army in October 1959 and spent 24 years serving his country. He was awarded the Presidential Service Badge for his service with the White House Signal Agency during the terms of Presidents Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon. He also served a tour in Vietnam, earning the Bronze Star Medal, Vietnam Service Medal. Don's final tour was with the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy in Ft. Bliss, Texas. After retirement from the Army in 1984, Don worked for the Veterans Administration in Washington, DC and the Training and Doctrine Command in Ft. Monroe, VA.

He was preceded in death by his parents Howard L. Woolever and Freida Stratemeyer (Mlinar). He is survived by his sisters Carol Russo and Pamela Grande, as well as his devoted family: wife Carol of 61 years and their children Donnie B. Woolever, Jr. (Bonnie), Lynn Thompson (Gary), Mark Woolever (Krista), Matthew Woolever (Jennifer); his two granddaughters, whom he adored and lovingly called "Sweeties," Laney Thompson and Cheyenne Woolever (Chris); and also the family fur babies (Jax, Jessie, Jackson, Bailey, Greg, Manny, and Valentine).

The family would like to thank Riverside Hospital, Riverside Rehab Hospital and Amedisys for the extraordinary care and compassion they provided Don and his family in his final hours.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be given to St. Joseph Catholic Church. A funeral mass will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 512 Buckroe Ave, Hampton, VA on Monday, November 4, 2024 at 10am.

Don will be laid to rest at a later date in a graveside ceremony with full military honors in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA.
