Donald F. Klein, 81, died Sunday, November 17, 2024. Born in Pittsburgh, PA, he had been a Hampton resident since 1964. He retired from Civil Service at Fort Eustis as a Safety and Occupational Health Specialist in 2004 after many years of service. He served 20 years at the Fort Monroe Fire Department, with a total of 39 years of safety experience before he retired for good in 2004. He attended St. Joseph Catholic Church. Don was a member of the Elks Lodge #366. In his younger years he enjoyed hunting, shooting, and family camping trips to the mountains. He was an avid history buff, especially World War II history, and enjoyed researching his family genealogy.
Preceded in death by his beloved wife of 51 years, Marie A. Klein, his brother, Ronald Simmons and sister, Betty Zastrow; survivors include his children, Brenda C. Sykes, Jennifer E. Hammonds, and Kurt A v. Klein; three grandchildren, Steven A. Hammonds, Christopher R. Sykes, and Jessica N. Sykes; and three great-grandchildren, Nicoli C. Hammonds, Brooklyn R. Hammonds, and Evelyn M. Hammonds.
All services will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any memorials be made to the Tunnels to Towers Foundation, 2321 Hylan Blvd., Staten Island, NY 10306 or to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, KS 66675-8516.
