Lt. Col. Donald George Dair, USAF, retired, died Wednesday, September 25, 2024. Born in Glendale, CA, he had been a Hampton resident for the last 50 years where he was an active member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, volunteering his time, attending the men's prayer breakfast, and the J.O.Y. group.
He received his bachelor's degree in History from Occidental College in Los Angeles, CA, and his master's degree in Latin American Studies from the University of Texas in Austin. After serving over 27 years in the Air Force, he retired in 1982 and then went on to work at Poquoson Motors. He later found his calling while working for over 21 years for the Virginia Employment Commission assisting veterans in finding jobs for which they were suited. He was very active in the Elizabeth Lake Neighborhood Association and always enjoyed his neighborhood walks. He was also very generous with a number of charities throughout the country.
Lt. Col. Dair was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Jill Mason Dair. Her last 8 years were spent in a nursing facility, and he never missed a day of visiting with her, even after she failed to recognize him. His commitment to her was unwavering. He was also preceded in death by his grandson, Derek Atkins and his brother, Frank Dair. Survivors include his daughters, Tamara Atkins and husband, Ernie, Amanda Graham and husband, Charlie; so,n Matthew Dair and wife GuyNethe; four grandchildren, Dean Epps, Mason Graham, Ian Graham, and Alexander Dair; and four great-grandchildren, Randolph Atkins, Lola Atkins, Isabella Epps, and Gunner Epps.
All services will be private.
