Obituary

Donald Lee Belbin, affectionately known to many as "Bingo" or "Big Don," passed away on April 18, 2025, at the age of 72.

Donald was born in Newport News, VA to Robert and Barbara Belbin and grew up in Hampton, VA where he graduated from Kecoughtan High School. He retired from Yorktown Naval Weapons Station, where he worked as a Power Plant Operating Engineer Third Class. A dedicated worker, loyal friend, and loving family man, Donald made a lasting impact on everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.

He is survived by his son, Barry Belbin; his daughter, Emily Norwood (Jim); and his beloved grandchildren, Hannah Bond, Brooke Bond, and Bram Belbin. He is also survived by two brothers Ronald Belbin (Vandy) and Scott Belbin (Mary).

Donald was an avid hunter and a proud member of Cemetery Ridge Hunt Club, where he spent countless days in the woods with close friends, sharing laughs and enjoying the great outdoors. He also loved fishing and playing golf.

In his younger years, Donald was well-known in the local sports community, playing baseball, high school basketball and men's fastpitch softball in Fox Hill, Virginia for the F&M Bankers—later known as the Peninsula Merchants and James River Lasers. A talented catcher and phenomenal hitter with a lively personality, his teammates nicknamed him "Bingo," a name that stuck with him for life.

Donald had a gift for friendship—if you were lucky enough to become his friend, you had a friend for life. He cherished reminiscing with old friends from high school and his sports days. A natural storyteller and lifelong jokester Donald was always ready with a tale—true or not—that would have everyone laughing by the end.

Arrangements by R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home. A celebration of life will be held at the Peninsula Pilots Stadium at a later date.

He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered for the joy, laughter, and love he brought into the lives of so many.
