On October 14, 2026, the Lord called our beloved Diane Julia Smith home to Heaven. Born June 30, 1936, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, she was the eldest (of six) daughter of Phillip and Florence Engelmeier. She graduated from West View High School, PA and then for two years attended Pepperdine University in California with two of her closest friends. In 1956, she married Charlie Smith and together they began raising their 4 children primarily in Okemos, Michigan.
In 1978, the family moved to Buckroe Beach, VA. She bought and sold dolls in her shop “2nd Time Around” for over 40 years where she affectionally became known as the Doll Lady. Diane had many interests. She was all things PE in college, a cheerleader, majorette, and basketball player. She loved walking the boardwalk at the beach, reading, and visiting with the many people who came through her shop.
As a young woman she worked at a Christian service camp and that is where her strong faith began. She was a founding member of Langley Christian Church, the sister church to Northside Christian, where she attended for over 30 years. Diane’s faith in Jesus carried her through many of life’s challenges recognizing that salvation and spiritual strength come from God’s grace and Jesus’ death on the Cross. Diane cherished time with her family and her strong faith in Jesus has now been visualized as we know she is with Him.
She is survived by her cherished children, Amy Joy Ballor, Charles “Mark” Smith (Lou-Anne), Keith William Smith (Melissa), and Hollie Smith Clayton (Rick); ten grandchildren, Jordan, Kirstin, Corbin, Travis, Grant, Austin, Logan, Mason, Hunter, and Hamilton; and eleven great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 12:00 PM on Monday, October 19, 2026, at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, downtown Hampton with interment to follow at Parklawn Memorial Park.
