IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Diana Lynn
Greenwood Whalen
January 8, 1953 – October 21, 2021
Diana Lynn Greenwood Whalen was called to Heaven by Our Lord on October 21, 2021, after a brief but tough battle with brain cancer. She was so active and energetic that 68 was young for her to pass. She always said she would live to be 100 years old, but God had special plans for His angel, and she was at peace with her need to serve Our Holy Father.
Diana was born on January 8, 1953, in Smyth County, Virginia, but was a proud long time Hamptonian most of her years. She graduated from Hampton High School in 1970. Diana was a very diligent worker had a variety of jobs in her lifetime, all working with people. It was her passion to help others in need. She would do anything in her power to help anyone in need, and she did help hundreds of people in times of need. She was a very generous, selfless person to all.
Diana was preceded in death by her father Ralph Herbert Greenwood when she was a child, and her stepfather Herman David Fulford Sr. She is survived by her mother, Betty Lou Fulford, her 2 daughters, Lori Ann Branstetter and Brandi Ranee West (Bill West); her sisters, Myra, Roni, and Sandy, her brothers, Herbie and David. Diana (Nannie) as most people affectionately knew her as, had 4 grandchildren; Tiffany, Kyle, Ryan, and Alexis, and her 2 great-grandchildren, Trey and Willow, and many other children that loved Nannie and treated them all like they were her own.
Diana was so special to all that knew her. She loved and cared for all children and was especially fond of pets. She was Nannie to all kids and animals. She was an active member of the community and a beloved staple at the many churches that she volunteered at, where she was known helping give back to the homeless community. Diana felt the most joy in her life when she was in the company of her family and friends and when she was helping someone in need. Her favorite thing to do was to help people and share her generosity with others. Her memory will be kept alive by all that knew and loved her and her legacy can be kept alive by being kind, caring, and generous to others.
A memorial service to celebrate Diana's beautiful life will be held at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home 3pm, Saturday, November 13, 2021.
