Obituary

David Eugene Woody, age 85, was born to Lillie May Marshall Woody and Charles Francis Woody in Charlottesville, VA on March 22, 1937. He passed away Dec. 5, 2022 at his home in Hampton, VA.,  with Marilyn at his side.

He is survived by his wife Marilyn Swedlund – Woody; his daughters, Debra Bullock and Katherine Baranyai (Mike); their mother Marietta Woody; his daughters Julie Morrow of Scotland and Ronda Cole (Shane) of Australia; step children, Dorcene Fox, Renae Burg, Michelle Johnson and Ronald Swedlund, Jr; sister, Nelda Moyers of Waukegan, IL; grandchildren, Amy, Brad, James, Michael, Ailsa, Belinda, Austin, Ty, Keeley, Caenan, Dominic, Raif, Madalyn and Ryder; great grandchildren, Zachery, Gavin, Jade and Jace; and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Lillie and Charles Woody, brothers and sister, George Woody, Mildred Abraham, Jimmy Woody Sr., Thomas Cecil Woody, Charles Lindbergh Woody and Allen Keith Woody; son, Daniel Woody; grandson, Jordan Monterio; and mother of Dorcene, Doris Tugwell.

David attended a boys military style boarding school, Miller Manual School currently Miller School of Albemarle, from 5 th grade to graduation.  It was a school designed to assist needy families to teach a trade and ensure the boys received a well rounded education.  He learned many life lessons there from raising his own food to repair and maintaining property. They attended classes half day and worked the other half to keep up the farm and property. He graduated top of his class and continued to enjoy and value the friendships of the Miller School Boys his whole life, playing many rounds of golf and sharing stories.

Following graduation he joined the Air Force.  His brothers were all Navy enlistees but they told him to join the Air Force because "planes have to land".  He spent almost 23 years, retiring in 1977 from RAF UPPER HEYFORD, ENGLAND, where he ran the Post Office.  This is where he met his wife Marietta.

Following retirement he purchased rental properties so he could set his own schedule. He enjoyed camping in his Terry camper, golfing, betting on the horses, and travelling.

The last few years have been hard physically, dealing with the complications of diabetes and some early life style choices he made. After losing most of his eyesight and unable to golf or drive, life slowed down a lot. He enjoyed bike rides with Marilyn on the recumbent bikes when he was able. He enjoyed many hours a week listening to audible books.  He always said he was "perky or peachy", no matter how rough the day had been. We were able to travel to MN to visit Marilyn's family and also spend some time with his sister Nelda in Illinois.

We were blessed to connect with his daughters Julie and Ronda this summer and enjoyed visits from each of them.

He enjoyed attending memorial services at Alberene Church and Cemetery as often as he was able. His favorite hymns were Amazing Grace and How Great Thou Art.  What a blessing it is to have the assurance to know that he is in Heaven, not because of any good works or being a good person but because he asked for and received God's forgiveness. God's grace removed the pain in his legs and feet the last couple of days and allowed him to be mentally alert to have small conversations, resting peacefully, as he transitioned to his Heavenly home.
