IN LOVING MEMORY OF
David D.
Evans
December 28, 1925 – May 18, 2023
David Donald Evans of Hampton, Virginia passed away peacefully at home, on May 18, 2023, at the age of 97. He was preceded in death by his parents Ona G. Evans and Carl N. Evans, brothers Robert C. Evans, and Richard L. Evans, sister Laurie Hodson, and son Bruce Evans of Marion Virginia. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 74 years and 11 months, Roberta J. (Bobbie) Evans of Hampton, his son Jonathan Evans and his wife Lori and grandchildren Paige Evans and Christopher Evans all of Hampton, daughter Karen Nicely of Suffolk and granddaughter Sydney Bass of Evansville Indiana, and grandchildren Seth Evans of Astoria, New York and Brogan Evans of Greensburg, PA.
Don (Dave) was born in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania on December 28th, 1925, the youngest of 4 children. He graduated from Wilkinsburg High School in 1943. On December 27th, 1943, the day before his 18th birthday, he left home for the United States Marine Corps and served in the Pacific during World War II, where he was part of the occupation forces in Okinawa following the Japanese surrender. After his discharge from the Marine Corps in 1946, he came home to Virginia and enrolled in Madison College, where he met Bobbie, the love of his life. They married on June 19th, 1948. The couple moved to Whippany, New Jersey where Don worked for the Seeing Eye, training guide dogs for veterans who had been blinded during both World Wars. They moved back to Hampton in 1954 where Don worked for National Airlines (who merged with Pam American World Airways) until his retirement in 1989.
Don was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Hampton for over 68 years, where he served as a member of the chancel choir, Sunday School teacher, Deacon, and Elder. He also served as an Assistant Scout Master and Scout Master for the church's Boy Scout Troop 29, where both Jonathan and Bruce achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.
Don also loved The Virginia Military Institute but could not attend VMI because they were already full due to the large numbers of veterans going to college on the GI bill when he came home after WWII. Nevertheless, he supported the college throughout his life and held season tickets to VMI home football games for many years. He sponsored many "little brothers," who were members of the football team from out of state who did not have family who could regularly attend home games.
Don loved nature and animals of all kinds. He cherished his relationship with dogs throughout his life and loved to go on long walks with them every day. After he retired, he and his faithful 4-legged companion would often stop along their daily route to pick up newspapers and place them on neighbor's porches. Many days, their neighbors would come out and share a conversation or just a wave and a "thank you." He also loved to hike on the Appalachian Trail and spent many weekends and time in the summer hiking with family and scouts from Troop 29.
Don believed in family as the cornerstone of his life and treated everyone he knew as family. In addition to many cherished relationships with immediate and extended family, he enjoyed life-long friendships with neighbors, members of First Presbyterian Church and Troop 29, service members he met in the Marine Corp, and colleagues from the Seeing Eye and National Airlines. Don believed in taking personal responsibility for his actions, a life of service, treating others with kindness and respect, helping others, and leaving the world a better place than you found it.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1pm, Saturday, July 8th at First Presbyterian Church, 514 S. Armistead Ave., Hampton, Virginia.
