Obituary

Darrell "D.B." Wayne Brackin, Jr., 83, passed away Friday, March 6, 2015. A lifelong resident of Newport News, he graduated from St. Vincent's de Paul High School in 1948, where he was affectionately known as "Old Number 5." He worked as a Draftsman for Forrest Coile Architects and Associates for many years and later retired from the city of Newport News , Waterworks Department, as an Engineering Specialist. He served in the US Army Reserves, having attained the rank of Sergeant First Class. In 1950, he joined the Knights of Columbus and was a member for 52 years. In 1979, he became a Fourth Degree Knight Darrell was a Past Grand Knight of Knights of Columbus Council 511 and a Past Faithful Navigator of John F. Kennedy Assembly. He was honored as Sir Knight of the Year for the State of Virginia in the late 1990's. Darrell was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Roman Catholic Church for over 50 years, and served as an usher. He was passionate with respect to the importance of Catholic education and the morals and values embodied in the parochial setting. At Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School, he served on both the School Board and Building Committees. At Peninsula Catholic High School, he served on the Athletic Board, Financial Aid and Building Committees. Darrell was patriotic and supported our military service members. He was a considerate and thoughtful friend and valued his relationships. He had an outgoing spirit and never met a stranger. He loved golfing, boating, camping, and spending time in the Outer Banks. He also loved watching the Redskins, attending Notre Dame football games with his buddies, and was a fan of the Circus. Darrell was a kind, thoughtful and generous man who always thought of the needs of others before his own. He loved his family. He had a close and loving relationship with his daughters, who adored him. He expressed his love and devotion to them daily and set the example of the importance of family, faith, generosity, character and honor. His grandchildren were his greatest pride and absolute joy. He was always present for at their activities and took pride in their accomplishments. Darrell loved his sons-in-law and had a close relationship with them. They were the sons he never had. He treasured the time he spent with them and was proud of their accomplishments. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Catherine R. Brackin. He is survived by his daughters and their husbands, Mary and Billy Via and Janice "Sue" and Rob Hyatt, and grandchildren, Ali and Andrew Via. He is also survived by a brother, Donald Brackin. The family would like to express their sincere thanks and appreciation to the staff at VCU for the kind and compassionate care they provided for many years. A special thanks to Dr. Alvin Zfass , Dr. George Smallfield , and Birdie Smith. A special thanks to Audra and Malia with Medi hospice for their loving care and support. The family will receive friends from 4-6:00 PM Wednesday at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Roman Catholic Church. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated 9:30 am Thursday at the Church. Interment will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park. The family wishes expression of sympathy to take the form of contributions to the PCHS Athletic Fund, 600 Harpersville Rd., Newport News, VA 23601.
