Cora Jones died peacefully on December 5, 2017 with her family by her side. Cora was born in Nueva Valencia, Guimaras, Philippines on August 25, 1951 to Geronima Gallarda and Amado de la Cruz, Sr. Cora grew up in Nueva Valencia and spent her childhood together with her other sisters happily helping their father on the family rice farm. She started her education in Nueva Valencia Elementary School, Iloilo Provincial High School and graduated from Iloilo City College with a degree in Elementary Education but opted to leave the Philippines for a better life in another country. Instead of teaching, Cora worked for a few years in Angeles City, Philippines, until she was able to go to Sweden and then the United States. Cora worked as an Auditor for the US Navy in Norfolk until cancer forced her to retire in September 2017. She and Louie had been happily married since December 2006.
Cora was a loving, happy and generous aunt and 'lola' to the family. She was called 'Mom' by Mike's friends because she treated them just like her own son. She was a devout Catholic, a passionate sister, aunt and godmother and a friend to all. Cora had a talent for making people laugh and she brightened every room when she entered. She loved life, enjoying mahjong, visiting casinos and shopping. She was always happy to show off the beautiful clothes she bought on sale. Cora will be remembered for her warmth, her sense of humor, her generosity and the happiness she brought to her family and friends.
Cora was preceded in death by her parents, Geronima Gallarda and Amado de la Cruz, Sr. and her oldest sister, Margarita Konahap who died in September 2017. She is survived by her loving husband, Louie Jones, her only son, Michael Filush, her sisters, Meldy de la Cruz, Cory Elder (Bob), Nena Geonanga (Ben), Chit Joseph (Rick), Amado de la Cruz (Mie), her eight nieces and seven nephews and many family grandchildren who lovingly called her 'Lola Cora'.
Cora Jones will be greatly missed. The family is grateful for the love, prayers and comforting words offered to her during her illness. She may have lost her fight but the memory she left to everyone will never be lost.
The family will receive friends at Berceuse Funeral and Cremation Traditions on Sunday, December 10, 2017 from 5-7PM with a Rosary service following at 7PM.
