Obituary

Constance Marie Clarke, 86, also known as "Connie", "Joe Pie", or "Auntie Joe", was called home to be with her heavenly Father on Wednesday, January 23, 2019.

A native of Phoebus, Constance was born on July 7, 1932. She attended Phoebus Grade School and was a Hampton High School graduate. After living in Maryland, then California, for a brief period of time, Connie moved back to Phoebus in the early1970s. She founded Connie's Fashion in Phoebus which she operated until her retirement in 2002. She was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Hampton. She will always be remembered by her laugh and great attitude towards life. Connie had her faithful dog, Mickey with her to the end.

Connie was predeceased by her parents Ernest Lancer Clarke and Maver Lee Clarke; maternal grandparents Mollie Ellen Kennedy Lee and Aroe Lee, and paternal grandparents Elizabeth Lillian Lancer Clarke and John A. Clarke; and paternal great-grandparents Elizabeth Ferber Lancer and Henry Lancer. She was proceeded in death by her sisters Maver Elizabeth Clarke Parker and husband Lee Darracott Parker, and Ernestine Lee Clarke Jackson and husband Luther Thayer Jackson.

She is survived by her cousin Lou Leigh and wife JoAnn Leigh and sons James and Joseph Leigh; nieces Gwendolyn Parker Martin and husband Mike Martin, and Nancy Elizabeth Jackson; and nephews David Clarke Jackson and Thomas Luther Jackson and wife Norma Jeanne Jackson; great nieces Heather JaNell Jackson Stone and husband Zach Stone, and Hannah Nicole Jackson Dickins and husband Heiskell Dickins; and great nephews Joshua Lee Jackson and Austin Lee Hendrix. She is also survived by her great-great niece Claire Harper Dickins and great-great nephew Wyatt Reid Stone.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 pm, Monday, January 28, 2019 with interment to follow in Oakland Cemetery, by R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home. The family requests that memorial contributions be sent to Emmanuel Episcopal Church of Hampton or the Phoebus Improvement League.
