Colonel Arthur Roger Masoero, (U.S. Army, Retired), died peacefully on January 9, 2018 at age 82, after a lengthy illness. He was born on November 25, 1935 in Seattle, Washington. He attended the University of Washington and St. Leo University, and was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. Following college, he was commissioned as an Armor Officer in the United States Army and rose to the rank of full Colonel. During his service Arthur attended and graduated from the United States Army War College. One of his greatest joys was serving at St Mary's Star of the Sea Catholic Church as an usher and as a Sir Knight of the JFK Knights of Columbus Assembly and Knights of Columbus St. Mary Star of the Sea Council 511. His wife, Celeste Sue Masoero, has been a devoted and beloved wife and partner during their journey. Following their retirement from the U.S. Army in Hawaii, in January 1988, they moved to Hampton, VA where Arthur continued his service to his country as a military analyst for the Joint War Fighting Center (JWFC) Support Team. Arthur and Sue continued to enjoy a life-long passion for boating in the Hampton Roads with family, friends, and their dog Martina, who has been a constant companion and has brought much joy.
Arthur was preceded in death by his daughters, Corinne Suzanne and Carmen Marie who both died as infants, and Christina Antoinette Benn who died after a courageous battle with cancer in 2009.
Arthur is survived by his wife of 60 years, Celeste Sue Masoero of Hampton, VA; sons, Arthur Jr. of Dunkirk, Maryland and Anthony of Hampton, Virginia; four devoted grandchildren, Alyssa and Lauran Benn of North Carolina and Arthur Joseph Masoero II and Daniel James Masoero of Dunkirk, Maryland; and brother, Donald J. Masoero (Nadine) of Seattle, Washington; and many cousins.
The family will receive friends at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, 245 S. Armistead Ave., Hampton, VA 23669 on Friday, January 19, 2018 from 5:30-7PM, followed by a reception for family and friends at the Hampton Yacht Club, 4707 Victoria Blvd, Hampton, VA 23669. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10AM Saturday, January 20, 2018 at St. Mary's Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 1 Frank Lane, Fort Monroe, VA 23651. The service will be led by Monsignor Walter Barrett Jr. A gathering will follow at the Pine Cone Harbour Clubhouse 200 Dockside Dr. 23669 in Hampton, VA, located near the bridge inside the development. Interment at Arlington National Cemetery will full military honors will follow at a later date.
