Obituary

Clyde Denis Sundberg, Sr., 87, of Hampton, VA, our sweet, "Pop", passed away peacefully on February 27, 2025. He was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather who will always be remembered for his love of his family, his gentle spirit, patience, warm smile and his ability to do
anything. Born in Klamath Falls, Oregon, he was the only son of Audrey (Pearson) and Denis Sundberg. The family moved to Minnesota when he was a young boy and it is where Clyde and his sister, Judy, were raised in the Minneapolis area. Clyde spoke fondly of the memories he created
when he spent time on the farm with his extended family.

Pop enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, and while stationed in New York went to a dance where he met Dot, a young nurse, who became his wife and life partner for over 65 years. To impress Dot, he set-up a tennis date, even though he had never played before. He asked a friend to teach him, who encouraged him to beat up his racket to look like it had been used more than just his week's worth of lessons. After that time on the court, the two quickly started spending time together and getting to know one another.

Clyde's military career also included stints in Germany, (where their daughters were born), Japan, New Hampshire, Vietnam and Langley. Clyde was a proud U.S. Air Force veteran who continued to call Hampton home after he retired.

He had a sense of adventure and playful nature and there are many stories about his rollerblading escapades, family camping trips, RVing in retirement and floating on inner tubes with the grands at the lake where the family built their house themselves on the weekends. Pop was quick to jump on the floor with his grandchildren to enter their world of building, creativity and play.

Clyde was always good with his hands and figuring out how things worked. He loved to make and "engineer" things in his shop, keep things running around his home and just make things easier and better for everyone. He was a gifted guitar player who passed along his love of
music to his grandson, Jonah.

Pop loved his coffee and sharing a cup with his family and his friends brought him and everyone present joy. He would want everyone to remember to slow down and be in the moment. Pop, we will remember you for your gentleness, patience, kindness and love.

Clyde is survived by his wife, Dorothy; daughters, Lauri Sundberg and Lynn Plata (Errol); sons, Tom Sundberg (Elizabeth) and Clyde Sundberg, Jr.; grandchildren, Jonah, Shea, Arte and Caroline; and adopted family, Helen Burke (Phil); and his sister, Judy Pazik. He was predeceased by his parents Audrey and Denis Sundberg.

The family will receive friends from 4:00-5:00 p.m. on Friday, March 7, 2025 at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, 245 S. Armistead Ave, Hampton. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Bethel Manor Chapel on Saturday, March 8, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. Reception to follow.
