Clyde Joseph Norman passed away Friday, May 30, 2014 at the age of 90. He was born in Gallmon, Mississippi to Rachel Elizabeth and Richard Creaton Norman. The owner of the U. S. Grill, Virginia Cafe and Clyde's Restaurant in Phoebus for over 50 years, he made delicious cheeseburgers and served many an ice cold beer. Clyde was preceded in death by his parents, his beautiful wife, Juanita and six siblings. Left to cherish his memory are his son, Clyde Dudley Norman, daughter and son-in-law Susie and Dickie Thompson, grand-daughter Amy Lee Finnegan and husband Jacob and newest light of his life, Gracie Lee Finnegan, his great granddaughter. Also surviving is his youngest brother Dudley and wife June of Mississippi. Clyde was very active in his community. He was a member of VFW Post 3219, Monitor Lodge No. 197, American Legion Post 48 and was former Chief and life member of Phoebus Volunteer Fire Company. He was a proud veteran of WWII. Our Dad was a hardworking man all of his life. He provided a wonderful home and upbringing for us. He was honest, tough, humble and would give you the shirt off of his back. He was loved by many. Phoebus has lost a great man! A funeral service will be conducted at 11 AM, Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home Chapel, 245 S. Armistead Ave, Hampton with Rev. Donald Blagg officiating. Interment will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 6 - 8 PM Tuesday, June 3 at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home. Flowers are welcome and donations will be accepted at the Phoebus Volunteer Rescue Squad, 122 South Hope Street, Hampton, VA 23663.
