IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Cheri M.
Murphy
June 13, 1955 – November 5, 2023
On November 5, 2023, Cheri M. Murphy left this world after a courageous battle with chronic kidney disease and multiple myeloma. Cheri was born on June 13,1955 to the late Maurice Joseph Morgan and Virginia Eloise Morgan in the very small town of Natural Bridge, NY as one of 6 children.
Cheri was predeceased by her brothers Robin and David Morgan.
Cheri attended Carthage Central High School and went on to graduate from Cornell University. She moved to Virginia to start a life-long career at Old Dominion University in their Human Resources Department. Early in her career she met her loving husband Michael Murphy, and they were happily married for 42 years.
Cheri M. Murphy was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She is remembered for her gentle voice, selfless nature, kind heart, and a lifetime of passions and hobbies that she shared with her family and friends. She enjoyed working with her hands, and in many ways was an artist. She spent time curating beautiful gardens at her home. She had famous recipes loved by her extended family. She was an accomplished seamstress and created her daughter's wedding dress out of her original gown, hand sewed multiple dresses for her daughters for formal events and Christmas presents for the entire family.
Cheri was also a life-long Girl Scout leader, a tradition that was passed along to her grandchildren. She helped orchestrate the first America to Europe Girl Scout travel adventure and traveled across Europe with her younger daughter, Iris. She loved to travel and was the travel agent to her friends (the "Roaming Retirees") for planning elaborate cruises and cross-country train rides. She spent summers at Lake Bonaparte in upstate New York, a nostalgic retreat that brought friends and family to reunions from several other countries.
Cheri is survived by her husband Michael Murphy; her two daughters, Virginia Rotteveel (Nick and their two daughters Charlotte and Nilah); and Iris Murphy; her sisters, Claudia and Virginia; her brother Joe; a large extended family of loving nieces, nephews, cousins; and a host of long-time friends.
The family will hold a Celebration of Life in the first part of 2024.
