Obituary

Charlotte H. Covington went to eternal rest on August 15, 2015. She was born on August 31, 1922 in Phillis, VA, and had resided on the peninsula since 1933. She was preceded in death by her three sisters Clara H. Hummel, Elizabeth H. Bomboy, and Virginia H. Tinsman; by her daughter-in-law Jenny H. Covington; and by her beloved husband of 63 years Edward "Red" W. Covington, Jr. She is survived by her three children Charlotte A. Covington, Edward W. Covington III, Susan C. Mancil and spouse Charles D. Mancil, Sr.; honored family member Delores Pardee of Owosso, MI.; four grandchildren Jeffrey B. Covington and spouse Heatherly A. Covington, Kristi C. Gray and spouse Kevin L. Gray, Charles D. Mancil, Jr. and Drake C. Mancil; five great-grandchildren Kyler M. Covington, Keagan S. Covington, Samuel W. Covington, Benjamin H. Covington, Jacob W. Gray; and many nephews and nieces. Even though she held positions as a bookkeeper and/or office manager for several different companies such as Nachman's and Orkin throughout her life outside the home, her true calling was evident in the roles she excelled at within her home. As a wife, she and Red set a godly example of what a marriage should be for those around them and for many generations to follow. As a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, her gentle spirit and loving kindness was ever present. Her home was a place where all were welcome and there was always room to fit one more seat around the table at meal time. For decades, Sunday lunches after church were lovingly served as a highlight of the week for the family. The food was great, the fellowship even better, and there was always enough for friends, neighbors, and anyone else blessed to be able to experience her delicious cooking. The only down-side was having to wait for her to join us at the table before we were able to say the blessing and begin eating because she was always taking care to make sure everything was perfect up to the last minute, and it always was. She was a member of Liberty Baptist Church and treasured the learning and fellowship she found in her Bible class. Over the past year, she very much enjoyed living at The Devonshire in Hampton. She found the staff to be loving and supportive and cherished the time she was able to spend with the new friends she met there. The family will greet friends from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Wednesday, August 19, at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, 245 S. Armistead Ave, Hampton. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 am, Thursday, August 20 at Parklawn Memorial Park
