Charles Bernard
Venne
July 4, 1932 – January 30, 2021
Charles Bernard Venne, 88, of Washington, DC and formerly of Hampton, VA, died peacefully on Saturday January 30, 2021. He was born on July 4th 1932, the son of the late Joseph Ernest Venne and Amelia Mary Becht Venne. Charles graduated from Flaget High School in Louisville, KY in 1950 and joined the United States Air Force in 1952, where he reached the rank of Senior Master Sergeant, and served until 1975. After his military retirement, he worked at Cain Electronics in Hampton as a driver. He also worked at Naval Air Rework Facility in Norfolk, performing technical ground support. Later in life, he worked as a bus driver for the handicapped for Hampton Roads Transit, which he regarded as the most rewarding job of his life. He retired at the Armed Forced Retirement Home in Washington, DC, where he found a good friend in fellow military retiree Jane Cornell. Charles was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 34 years, Wanda Cross Venne. He was also preceded in death by his brother Theodore Venne and sisters Mary Venne Hollkamp and Martha Venne Ederer. Charles is survived by his children: Deborah Hennage of Montross, VA, Charles Randall Venne of Pomona, CA, Michael Venne of Hampton, VA, Kimberly Smallenberg of Bend, OR, and Daniel Venne of Mount Rainier, MD. He is also survived by grandchildren Chelsey Venne-Proctor of Orlando, FL, Marissa Venne of Richmond, VA, Amanda Smallenberg of San Diego, CA, Stephen Smallenberg of Bend, OR, and Grace Hennage Clemons of San Antonio, TX. Additionally, he is survived by his dear brother-in-law Jim Ederer of DeForest, WI.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 am, Saturday, February 6, 2021 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Hampton.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the Boys Town Charities at www.boystown.org .
Arrangements are under the care of R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, 245 South Armistead Avenue, Hampton, Virginia.
