Charles Kennedy Baker, age 90, of Johns Island, South Carolina passed away peacefully at home the morning of Friday, October 27th, 2017. He was born in Newport News, VA, to the late Nannie Elizabeth and James LaRue Baker. He graduated from Hampton High School and attended the University of Richmond. He married his beloved Ann Marie and raised their family in Hampton, VA, where he lived before moving to South Carolina to be with his son and family in 2011. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, cousin and a friend to all.
He was a member of Ivy Memorial Baptist Church. He retired in 1987 as Mechanical Supervisor with AMOCO Oil Refinery, Yorktown, VA, after 31 years of service. He was also a former employee of Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co. He served in the Navy as a Gunners Mate during World War II. He was an avid golfer and belonged to the Super Senior Golf Group at the Woodlands Golf Club; was a Life Time Member of the PGA Partners Club; and a Life Time Member of the WAA, LSM, LSMR Association from his service in the United States Navy. He also loved and took a lot of pride in working in his vegetable garden, sharing his harvest with family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 59 years, Ann Marie Baker; twin brother, James LaRue Baker; son, Charles Kennedy Baker, Jr; and granddaughter, Constance Arielle Baker.
Among those left to cherish his memory are his two sons and their wives, Timmy Lee Baker and Beverley Richards Baker of Jupiter, FL and William Patrick Baker and Theresa Lynn Stokes Baker of Johns Island, SC; Five grandchildren: Elizabeth Ann Marie Baker of York, SC; Nicholas Cole Baker (wife Mary Katherine Baker) of Winston Salem, NC; Captain Russell James Baker (wife Kirsten Elexa Baker) of Parsberg, Germany; Matthew Ryan Baker of Johns Island, SC; and Kristen Elizabeth Baker of Charleston, SC; Six great-grandchildren: Sawyer Hawke Baker, Remington Dove Baker, William Banks Baker, Ava Kennedy Baker, Charles Alasdair Baker, and James Lysander Baker, with another great-grandchild on the way this coming June; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 3:30 – 5:00 pm on Thursday, November 2nd at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, 245 S Armistead Ave, Hampton, VA 23669. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, November 3rd with Rev. Frank Earwood officiating. Burial will be at Parklawn Memorial Park with Military Rites.
