Obituary

Catherine Mary Wells, 61, went home to Heaven on Wednesday, May 10, 2017.  She fought a good fight for 18 months, always keeping hope and being faithful to the end. She was born in Philadelphia, PA. Later, her family moved to New Jersey, where she attended Glassboro State College and received her bachelors degree in Biology. She met and married Steve, a career Army officer, and made their home where the Army sent them, around the United States and Germany. Her favorite Army assignment was West Point, NY- she loved the location, the community, and it was there that she started following Jesus. Upon Steve's retirement in 1997, they made their home in Seaford, VA.

Cathy is survived by her husband of 36 years, Steven E. Wells; son, Matthew W. Wells; daughters, Julie E. Wells and Laura A. Wells; mother, Catherine Umstetter; sister, Linda Beatty; and brothers John Umstetter and Joseph Umstetter.

Cathy was known for her sweet smile, gentle spirit, humble servanthood, and being a beautiful bearer of Christ's image. Her nurturing and caring spirit was shown through her love for children and teaching them about Jesus. She served faithfully in Seaford Baptist Church's preschool ministry for nearly 20 years. She began the Good News Club at Seaford Elementary, an after-school program where children learned about the Bible. She also enjoyed being a member of Bible Study Fellowship, which deepened her understanding of God's Word.

One could most often find her doing something, she hardly ever sat still. She loved to be outside, whether it was gardening in her backyard or working with the York County Master Gardeners. Cathy and Steve did "ministry together", including landscaping the church lawn, teaching in the church's preschool ministry, and volunteering in numerous service projects. In raising her three children, she was always "present", supportive, and praying for them. She loved annual family vacations- road trips, camping, and hiking. She was very artistic, enjoying everything from painting to woodwork.

She loved children and she loved Jesus. Her's was a life well-lived for the glory of God.

Her favorite Bible verse was Isaiah 40:31,

"But those who hope in the Lord

will renew their strength.

They will soar on wings like eagles;

they will run and not grow weary,

they will walk and not be faint."

The family wishes to thank Heartland Hospice for their compassionate care and support.

We will be celebrating her life on Saturday, May 20th at Seaford Baptist Church; 1311 Seaford Rd. in Seaford, VA. Visitation from 1-2pm and Service from 2-3pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family wishes for contributions to be made to either of the following organizations that Cathy was passionate about: Global Aid Network, the humanitarian arm of Cru, www.gainusa.org/donate or to Child Evangelism Fellowship of the Peninsula (Good News Club) PO Box 5176, Williamsburg, VA 23188.
