Obituary

Carolyn Elizabeth Hume, aka NaNa, our family matriarch, has passed on to her heavenly home - She is FREE AT LAST!

NaNa was predeceased by her sister Louise Hanley, as well as children Nancy Hopkins, Willard "Billy" and Gary Hume.

NaNa is survived by her daughter Brenda Della Moyer, who shares the same birthday, along with her beloved son-in-luv Eric Moyer. Brenda dedicated the majority of her life to caring and advocating for NaNa with the ardent motto "speak for those who don't have a voice."

NaNa is also survived by her grandchildren Christine Somora, Gary Goodman, Denae Stephens, Brendan Ondra, and Christopher, Stephen, and Joshua Moyer; great-grandchildren Joseph and Alex Goodman, and Carl "CJ" and Colin Somora.

NaNa was a devoted member of Calvary Assembly of God, her home church in Hampton. She would frequently and confidently shout "I love the Lord, and He loves me!" It didn't matter the time or location, she was always willing to raise her arms and give praise and thanks to God. She was a devout prayer warrior!

NaNa was born on 5 October 1927 in Buffalo, NY, to parents Martin and Alice (Moyer) Frasch. She was raised in Syracuse, attending Catholic schools and graduating top of her class in 1947.

NaNa spent the majority of her life in the Rochester locale with her husband Earl "Bones" Hume. Bones passed away in 1992, at which time NaNa moved to Hampton, VA, at the age of 65.

Never having it easy, NaNa lived a rough life, physically and emotionally, from childhood during the Great Depression and into her adulthood during WWII, and well into her senior years. She fought until the very end, stating "if I hadn't had gone through that, I wouldn't be here." In 1932, NaNa was in a traumatic car accident suffering severe, life-threatening fractures of her skull, nose and face. Presumed dead, she was taken to a local morgue but hours later was found breathing; doctors frantically worked to save her life. After many months of intensive hospital care and years of therapy, she miraculously recovered. The horrific accident left her sister with a broken back, her father with multiple broken bones, and claimed the precious life of her dear mother at the young age of 31.

NaNa was a master of the culinary arts and spent her life working and serving in restaurants and kitchens. Even right up until this past Thanksgiving, "feeding others" was always her mantra. She always stated "if there's not enough food for everyone else, then there's not enough for me either." In this NaNa strived to live by Christ's example, as epitomized in Matthews 25: "For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me… 'Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.'"

NaNa was a natural in the arts of crocheting, knitting, and sewing; always refitting or designing outfits for her family. She also spent many years and countless hours volunteering at Gloria Dei and Hampton Christian schools, as well as the YMCA.

NaNa was a member of the Christian weight-loss group TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) and began her journey toward a healthier life at the age of 73; substantially lowering her weight and successfully keeping it off for the remainder of her life.

One of Nana's greatest talents was spreading her love to family, friends, neighbors, and strangers; reaching out with cards, phone calls, and letters. Her legacy and lasting impact on everyone in her long life will be felt for eternity. As her granddaughter Denae so accurately stated: "There's so much more left of her that you can't see or hold...that lives on with us...the memories, the things she told us, the jokes, the phrases, the shared experiences, the family line, the looks..."

We're all comforted in knowing just how joyful she is now; walking, talking, singing, dancing, and worshiping in the presence of God! We can only imagine...

NaNa teamed up with Dr. Terry Lee in 2009 to document her life in a segment for the Wisdom of Age Project , contributing a powerful "documentary story of a daughter and her mother facing the challenges of elder care." If you desire to hear and learn some personal, firsthand truth of caregiving, please visit http://www.risingpress.org/nana to see what "Understanding Hearts" really is about. "Your Love Never Fails!"

NaNa's loving family is grateful to the joint care-teams who have provided the dedicated healthcare and support over the many years. Thank you for loving our NaNa - she loves you all.

Those blessed lives NaNa touched will revere her two greatest attributes, unconditional love and forgiveness. NaNa exemplified what unconditional love truly is; the active choice to love someone no matter what. With her level of unconditional love, satisfaction came from putting the health, needs and well-being of others first with no expectation of reward for herself. Forgiveness to her meant that true forgiveness is to "forgive and forget, then forget what you forgave."

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, 8 Dec 2018, at 12:30pm , at Calvary Assembly of God, located at 1380 N Mallory in Hampton.
